Poli(tricks)
How trained is your eye? Can you sniff out poor reasoning? Can you hear the dog whistle appeals embedded in careful word choice? Detecting modes of political propaganda is a skill that requires you to be aware of every possible front of persuasion. This project is your visual guide to counter-act political persuasion.
Your source material for analysis can only come from the following links or current candidate websites and supporter websites. You will scour through various propaganda and expose both the visual and written persuasion. A photograph may be so loaded that you comment upon several of its characteristics. Each observation must be unique from each sample. For example: an observation that explains how the flag is a transfer device for patriotism can not be used twice. There is plenty to find!
Using Google Presentation:
1. Photobombs- Through political photography, find examples of how the candidate is targeting specific political themes/audiences (5) (job creation, education, security, etc)
2. Identify the following that appear in each picture
A) Propaganda Technique (See PDF posted on Classroom)
B) VALS Technique
C) Basic Appeal(s)
3. Choose one photo and write a rhetorical analysis of the persuasion at play. Be sure to establish the audience (their political needs/wants). Next you will discuss the positional/symbols and how it will benefit the perception of the politician in the eyes of his target voter.
(Use Blank Slide posted in Assignments in Classroom-in saves automatically)
Create in Google Presentations- Use arrows, highlights, etc to draw attention to the persuasion technique.

Rhetorical Analysis of 2012 RNC and DNC Keynotes
Homework: Don't forget to complete the Speak the Language Press Release. See the sub if you were not here Friday and have a classmate explain our analysis of the Monster ThickBurger as our reference point.
Analysis experiment-
Let's see how well you can tackle a politician's rhetoric in real-time. Now decide which speech you will watch/ listen (Castro or Christie) on the Chromebook. As you listen to the speech, you will place comments on the speech that unpack the various rhetorical strategies at play. This means both of you have the same document open and comment on it. You can stop the audio/video at any point if you need to catch your thoughts.
For example: "Speaker X attacks the economic policy of Candidate Y because ...." or "A weakness of Candidate X is....this is why it is targeted."
Focus all of your commentary energy on what emotions/ideas that the speaker is attempting to evoke or plant in the minds of the audience.
Aim for a minimum of 20 comments in your doc.
Transcripts of Speeches for Analysis are already available to you in Classroom.
Audio/Video of Castro via NPR or video via NYT
Audio/Video of Christie via NPR or video via NYT

3-3-3 Week of 4-13-2015
What do you mean by a 3-3-3...*
A technique = a skill that the author utilizes in prose writing. Novels, short stories and poems are best suggestions when demonstrating techniques.
A strategy = a skill that can be similar to a technique BUT are seen in speeches. You must consider how the skill demonstrates logos, pathos, Q2’s on speeches and Q1’s for synthesis elements.
A debate/theme= Typical engagement of a big idea from philosophy/economics/society/etc that may appear in Q3.
The objectives for the 3 – 3 – 3 assignment:It’s all about author’s craft: what is he/she doing? How is he/she getting that done with a strategy? How can I access evidence to support, challenge, or qualify a deep idea?
DUE DATES: 4/17, 4/24, 5/1
Bring it at the end of every week for check in. If you convince me of your mastery in that particular analysis, you will not have to repeat that particular writing for next week.
We are still questioning are skills with strategy work.
We need to KNOW our techniques/strategies/fallacies and how they work in a text.
Guideline for Paper Submissions for 3 – 3 – 3
This week:
Tuesday-Custom Ink/Booster
Wednesday- TED Talk analysis
Friday-TBA
* This is a great idea lifted from Oz in preparation of our final push towards the test.

- We have three weeks before the AP Exam.
- We have three days each week to practice.
- We will review three of the best strategy/thematic discussions chosen at the beginning of the next week.
DUE DATES: 4/17, 4/24, 5/1

Guideline for Paper Submissions for 3 – 3 – 3
- 1 Page (typed document – this means typed)
- Title of work and media concept (i.e. The Onion MacBook Wheel)
- Strategies provided (pro-con, us vs. them)
- How were the strategies utilized? (establish fear early, call to action)
- What type(s) rhetorical modes were demonstrated?
- What effects are produced because of these strategies?
- Are they effective? Why or Why not? (You better not tell me yes/no)
For #3- This will resemble the Free-response essay.
